The other day I watched a video podcast featuring a somewhat prominent figure in the Christian truther sphere who presented themselves as an expert on certain topics, someone who claimed to have contacts in high places whose identities had to be protected but who were in a position to know what not only the shadowy forces in our own government, but governments around the world are getting up to, and who routinely disclose this information to this person. In the course of the conversation, this person revealed something about themselves that called not only their credibility, but also their Christianity into question.
I apologize for being so vague. This all happened on a friend’s podcast and that video has since been taken down and my purpose here isn’t to call attention to it, or to this person, but to address some of the things they talked about in a way that seemed purposefully designed to sow a spirit of fear.
So let’s talk about Project Blue Beam and Apophis. If you don’t know what those things are, hang in there. Or, maybe just consider yourself blessed and go your merry way. But for those who know or want to know, let’s get into it.
Project Blue Beam
The widely held belief is that Project Blue Beam is a plan involving NASA to use holographic technology to fake an alien invasion. What it actually is, is an alleged NASA document that was leaked to Canadian reporter Serge Monast in the early 90s outlining a plan to basically use a vast array of advanced technology to manufacture a series of events designed to undermine all of the world’s religions and brainwash the masses into accepting a one-world religion, government, and Messianic, god-like leader.
Using holograms to depict a realistic-looking alien invasion is part of that plan, but only a small part. The first step in the plan outlined in the document is to use technology to cause a series of major earthquakes in order to “uncover” planted archeological “evidence” that proves our alien origins and an alien source of all of our religious beliefs. The plan also involves using advanced technology to cause everyone to hear the voice of whichever god they worship telling them that this is the actual truth. It also involves disappearing all of the undesirables somehow in a counterfeit rapture, followed closely by the holographic alien arrival, and an alien-human hybrid leader coming on the scene to show the world the true way to peace and enlightenment.
Not long after Monast reported on this document, supposedly his daughter was abducted and he was given a demand to retract his story, but he refused and stood his ground. Not long after, he, a healthy, middle-aged man, dropped dead of a heart attack. Not only that, but within a week, another young, healthy man who had been assisting him in a translation of the document, also died of a heart attack. This all seems to lend veracity to the document and the nefarious agents behind it who didn’t want it revealed to the public.
This is all a very basic summary. If you want to know the details, the podcast Free the Rabbits did an episode where they go over the document in-depth, and also talk about why it’s problematic. You can listen to that here, or look it up on your favorite podcast player.
There are a lot of questions we should all be asking about this particular conspiracy. To start with, how reliable was Serge Monast? Was the document he was given genuine? How reliable was his contact? These are questions we can’t answer, but the very fact that there’s no way to verify any of this should be a red flag.
Another question: does the near god-like technology to pull this off even exist? Maybe. While I don’t doubt that a lot of our technology is given to us from the fallen realm, just as it was in the days of Noah, or that there’s a lot of advanced technology that hasn’t yet been disclosed to the public, unlike a lot of truthers I also don’t ascribe god-like powers or total freedom to do whatever they want to the government or to the fallen realm. I trust in God’s sovereignty an in his restraining ministry. I’m highly skeptical that God has allowed unfettered access to fallen technological know-how or the ability to fully implement it, and I simply do not believe that He would allow this level of deception on such a mass scale to play out before the Tribulation and the rapture of the Church.
Who and what is the Restrainer?
3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6 And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, 10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, 12 in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. - 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12 (emphasis mine)
Paul wrote his second letter to the church in Thessalonica in response to a counterfeit letter they’d received purporting to be from him which apparently said that they had missed the Resurrection and were currently going through the Tribulation. In verse three, the Greek word for “the rebellion” is apostasia. In our modern English Bibles, it’s typically translated as something along the lines of rebellion, falling away, or apostasy, and is understood by many to be referring to a great falling away from the faith that will happen during the Tribulation.
But earlier English Bibles, such as the Geneva Bible, translated that word as “the departure,” which is a more accurate translation. Several Bible scholars, most notably Arnold Fruchtenbaum, have done extensive research to show that the Strong’s definition of apostasia to mean defecting from the faith is a theological understanding that has been read back in. But in Paul’s day, the word meant departure, from the root word aphistemi, which means to stand away or depart.
Here’s HELPS on the topic:
646 apostasía (from 868 /aphístēmi, "leave, depart," which is derived from 575 /apó, "away from" and 2476 /histémi, "stand") – properly, departure (implying desertion); apostasy – literally, "a leaving, from a previous standing."
Why am I belaboring this? Because in the context of the passage it tells us who/what is departing or standing away: the restrainer.
(This is not to say that scripture didn’t prophesy a great falling away — that’s in 1 Timothy 4, and it’s already underway, and has been since at least the 1960s — although a case could be made that it began in the Enlightenment and has been gaining steam ever since).
The above passage refers to the Restrainer as both a what and a who. There’s been a lot of debate about what and who this Restrainer is. Candidates include God Himself, the Holy Spirt (particularly His indwelling presence in Church-age believers), the Archangel Michael and the heavenly host, human government under the Holy Spirits influence, and the Church. I tend to believe that it’s all of the above — that God has instituted a restraining ministry, under the direction, power and influence of the Holy Spirit, which involves both His angelic armies and His human warriors who have been tasked with holding back the gates of hell.
My understanding of this passage, in combination with other prophetic passages, is that there’s going to come a point where God directs the Holy Spirit to stop restraining and commands His angels to stand down — and also removes the Church, who would otherwise continue our ministry of praying for the world and withstanding the gates of hell. Only after that happens can something like Project Blue Beam — if that is indeed a genuine, Satanically-inspired plan for deceiving the world and bringing on the rule of the Antichrist — take place.
In the video I mentioned at the start, this person claimed that, according to his (unverifiable) sources in high places, not only is Project Blue Beam real, but that it’s already underway, and that we can expect to see fake aliens and mind control being rolled out as early as this year. I would remind you that the first step outlined in the Project Blue Beam document is a massive earthquake uncovering earth-shattering archeological findings. If this project is already underway and as far along as this person claims, then somehow this massive earthquake and discovery has already happened and somehow absolutely nobody has witnessed it or reported on it. Is that even possible, let alone likely? In this age in which everyone is walking around with video cameras in our pockets and we’re all citizen journalists? I’ll just leave that question there for y’all to consider.
For what it’s worth, from the very first time I heard about Project Blue Beam, my instinct has been that this is a psy-op meant to sow skepticism and disbelief about the very real supernatural events that are going to take place, including the rapture of the Church and simultaneous resurrection of all of the dead in Christ. For those who think that we “rapture kooks” believe in a “secret rapture,” let me assure you that there’s nothing secret about the event as depicted in scripture, and the Enemy has been hard at work for a good long while now preparing alternative explanations for millions of people disappearing from the earth. This is one of them.
That said, it may very well be how Satan plans to carry things out once we’re gone and he’s no longer under restraints. Even so, contrary to a Great Falling Away during the Tribulation, Revelation actually depicts throngs of people coming to salvation during that time and rejecting the mark (and being martyred because of it). So whether this is the Great Deception or it’s something else, plenty of people won’t be fooled by it. If you’re an unbeliever who’s reading this and you end up getting left behind, I pray that you’ll be one of them.
But it’s also my sense that the “lying signs and wonders” attributed to the Antichrist and the false prophet won’t be pulled off with holograms and energy weapons, but will actually be supernatural in origin. But who knows? And that’s kind of the point — we don’t know.
Apophis
What in the world is Apophis? Named for the Egyptian god of chaos and destruction (how sweet), Apophis is a large asteroid discovered in 2004 that was originally calculated to be on a collision course to strike the earth on April 13, 2029. Since then, NASA has revised their calculations and have assured us that it won’t actually hit us, it will just come uncomfortably close. If you believe NASA, which I know that a lot of you reading this don’t.
The person in the video claimed that his high-up contacts assured him that NASA is lying to prevent a panic and that it will indeed collide with us. Here’s why I’m skeptical (one reason, anyway): I need only point back to the ministry of the Restrainer. Seeing as how not a single cataclysmic-sized asteroid has impacted the earth in the whole of human history, I tend to think that part of the Restrainer’s ministry is shielding the earth from such things. So if we’re still here, I tend to believe it’s not gonna happen.
The big question is, will we still be here?
A lot is being made about this asteroid in prophecy-watching circles, and for good reason. It’s timing is certainly interesting. For one thing, there’s a widely held assumption that the Tribulation will begin seven years prior to the 2,000th anniversary of the crucifixion, resurrection and the beginning of the Church Age. I do question why we’re assuming God’s going to shave 7 years off the Church Age instead of fulfilling a full 2,000 years, but in a lot of minds that makes sense. While we’re not certain when exactly Jesus was crucified, most put it anywhere from 32 AD to 36 AD. There’s also an assumption that Apophis may be the apparent asteroid mentioned during the trumpet judgements — more on that later. And there is also a widely held belief that the rapture will be connected to the Feast of Trumpets, the “last trump” of which is meant to symbolize the resurrection of the righteous dead, and a feast for which “no one knows the day or hour” because it’s a two-day feast that only officially begins when the watchmen in Jerusalem spot the new moon of the new year.
So basically, if you assume that the trumpet judgement asteroid strikes at or near the mid-point of the tribulation, and Apophis is slated to (maybe) strike on April 13, 2029, if you back up 3.5 years you arrive at this year’s fall feasts. Rosh Hashanah, a.k.a. the Feast of Trumpets, is actually scheduled for September 22-24, but again, the actual date of when the new moon will be spotted is unknown. And as many assume that there will be a space of weeks or months between the rapture and the beginning of Daniel’s 70th week — which begins when the Antichrist makes or affirms a covenant between Israel and “the many” — that timing makes a lot of sense. And 3.5 years to the day prior to when Apophis is supposed to fly by is the end of the Feast of Booths, which seems like a fitting time for a historical (and prophetic) treaty with Israel to be signed by a false Messiah.
Like I said, this is all very interesting. But it’s not a slam dunk.
I keep hearing a lot of phrophecy watchers and teachers tying Apophis to Wormwood of Revelation 8:11, which depicts the third trumpet judgement. The problem I have with this is that, upon close reading, I understand Wormwood to be a fallen angelic entity being cast down from heaven, not an asteroid. Prior to this, the second trumpet causes “something like a great mountain, burning with fire” to be thrown into the sea. That does sound a lot like an asteroid, although considering that mountains are often used in prophetic passages as a metaphor for elohim, this could also be an entity. And it’s also entirely possible that a supernatural entity could ride a natural asteroid down here. But even assuming that Rev. 8:8 does depict an actual asteroid, it says that it’s “like a mountain.” I assume that means it’s mountain-sized. Whereas Apophis is only about the size of the Empire State Building. Certainly enough to do a lot of damage — maybe big enough to do the specific damage attributed to this mountain-like object, which turns a third of the sea to blood and kills a third of the marine life and destroys a third of the ships on the ocean.
So… I don’t know, maybe? I guess we’ll find out in a few years! But again, I’m not about to panic that a cataclysmic asteroid is going to strike the earth while I’m still on it, which tells me that the Restrainer is still at work restraining.
And just so you know — even if Apophis doesn’t strike in 2029 and God actually does see fit to let the Church Age last a full 2,000 years and the Tribulation won’t begin until afterwards — Apophis is scheduled to do another super-close flyby in 2036. 😳
Testing the Spirits
I think there’s a lesson to be learned here in discernment and testing the spirits. Jesus said of false prophets and teachers that we would know them by their fruit. I don’t think he meant, “Do they look and act like good, upstanding Christians?” I think he was referring to the fruit that their teaching produces in us. If someone is delivering a message that produces fear, anxiety, confusion, outrage, etc., that message is not from God. If a message is truly inspired or led by the Holy Spirit, then it will not only line up with scripture, but also with the fruit of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self-control. The Holy Spirit will always point us toward Jesus and toward the Father’s glory. He will never glorify the forces of darkness by making them seem all-powerful and something for Christians to fear. And there are a lot of professed Christian “truthers” out there, especially on social media and YouTube, doing exactly that.
I started this publication precisely because I wanted to call out that kind of content and combat it, encouraging my readers (which at the time was just a handful of Instagram friends and followers) to practice and grow in spiritual discernment and also critical thinking skills. After a long break to rest up, recover from burnout and focus on my primary mission — writing fiction that promotes a Biblical worldview — I’m feeling led to get back on mission, as well as to share my testimony about how I was led astray into some deceptive New Age practices and ultimately led back, and to track the history of various tentacles of deception within the church.
I don’t know how frequently I’ll post. I’m not going to try to establish a regular schedule, and I never want to get to a point where I’m writing here just for the sake of keeping my content schedule. I’ll write and post when I can, and when I feel led. But I guess, for the time being, Spirit, Sword and Truth is back in the saddle. I’d appreciate your prayers for guidance and also for protection as I take up my virtual pen in this space once again.
Until next time!
